Sacramento APOA Vu Nguyen Memorial Scholarship
The Vu Nguyen Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department’s Gang Suppression Unit and the Sacramento Asian Peace Officers Association, was established in memory of Vu Dinh Nguyen.
Vu and his family escaped Vietnam via helicopter airlift from the American Embassy on April 29, 1975. After growing up in Modesto, California, Vu chose to pursue a law enforcement career. He graduated with honors from Sacramento State University (CSUS) in 1997 with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. In 1999, Vu was accepted into the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Academy. Vu graduated as the top recruit in his class and secured three of the top four awards.
As a member of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, Vu worked in a variety of assignments, including the court house, various patrol assignments, and as a Problem Oriented Police Officer. In April 2007, Vu was promoted to the rank of detective and assigned to the Gang Suppression Unit. This was Vu’s dream job, and he really felt he could make a difference in the community.
On December 19, 2007, Vu gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting the community. Vu was shot and killed as he attempted to apprehend a fleeing suspect.
Vu will always be remembered for his professionalism, humor, and being the consummate team player. Vu was proud of his Vietnamese heritage and was well respected amongst the Vietnamese community.
